Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use Allyson South Designs?

Having a senior art director design your book brings the overall creativity and quality of your project to a whole new level. With my ability to thoughtfully lay out pages, expertise in combining images and text and experience in working with photography, you get the benefit of my seasoned eye for design, composition and visual storytelling. Additionally – you won’t have to download or learn an application in order to create your photo book. I will save you time and effort and make the process easy and rewarding.

Can't I just make my own book using iPhoto or similar?

If you are looking for a simple template to drag and drop your photos into, then programs like iPhoto should suit your needs. If you want a completely customized, visually compelling story that is tailored to your specific project, then you are in the right place. Every book I design is completely unique – extra details are added to embellish your story resulting in a high-quality, professionally printed product you won’t get with a template.

How long does it take?

Design times vary depending on the complexity of the project. Once all final images are selected and text is received, typical design time is about two weeks. When the final design is approved, printing and shipping are an additional 7-10 business days. It is possible to rush printing for an additional cost.

How much does it cost?

A flat fee per project is charged so you know exactly how much it will cost right from the beginning. Costs will vary depending on the number of pages, size of book, paper quality and binding method. Please contact me so I can give you an accurate estimate for your specific project.

What’s included in your fee?

Initial consultation to review images, text and theme of the project. Design and layout of cover and all pages of the book including photo selection, color palette and theme selection, typography treatment and font selections, minor photo retouching (color correction, red-eye reduction) and enhancements. Two rounds of design revisions are provided via pdf proofs. The fee also includes printing and shipping of one copy of the book.

What’s not included in your fee?

Stock photography/illustration. Scanning. Extensive retouching or photo restoration.

What type of payment is accepted?

Payment is accepted via PayPal or personal check. Payments may be made directly via electronic invoice. 50% retainer due when job is awarded. Balance due prior to delivery of book to client.

How many photos should I include?

More is always better – having a broad selection of images to choose from to tell your story creates a more well-balanced book. A good rule of thumb is 30% more images than number of pages. Images need to be at least 200 dpi, but preferably, 300 dpi resolution.

How do I transfer my photos?

There is a secure ftp site for uploading your photos. Photos can also be accessed through online photo storage sites, such as Picasa or Flickr. Or if you prefer, you can mail them to me on a DVD.

Will you retouch my images?

Minor retouching is included in the design fee, such as minor color correcting, levels adjustments, red-eye reduction and removal of film blemishes or spots. Extensive retouching or photo restoration will require additional charges.

Will you scan my images?

I can scan your images for an additional charge – please contact me for details.

What other things do I need to decide on before you get started?

There are several options to consider and decide on when it comes to printing your book. You’ll need to determine the number of pages, size of the book, binding method and paper quality as these all factor into the final price. Visit the Book Options page for more details.
